A Glimpse
I Open My Eyes
Once upon a time, a man awoke
From a deep slumber and
Everything was different.
The light, the ease behind the eyes,
A sense of wonderment, a deep satisfaction.
Last night’s darkness and panic and terror and dread
And the decision,
A million miles away,
A story from a different time and space.
I am an old black woman, said the voice.
A remarkable statement from a place so very close,
Intimate and unquestioned.
He rose and walked to the kitchen
The light slightly glimmering.
He sat down and began to write.
